I appreciate that this is fundamentally a children's show, and that I'm not really the target market (being 20), so I don't blame the makers of the show, but the mock sickness and the extended fight/chase along the city's postal system felt too cartoony for me to enjoy the episode much. After the relatively serious season 1 finale, and season 2 opening episode, this episode felt too much on the cartoony side for me. 1 The show's first two seasons each consisted of 20 episodes, while the third season had 21. Each 'Book' takes its name from one of the elements that Aang, the protagonist, must master: Water, Earth, and Fire. Here we see Azula almost beat Aang, and her henchmen (henchwomen?) prove more than a match for Katara and Sokka.īut overall, I don't find it a particularly enjoyable episode. The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise refers to each season as a 'Book', in which each episode is referred to as a 'chapter'. We saw her outmatch Zuko, but Aang and Katara could both do that. It also cements Azula's place as a very powerful antagonist. This episode shows us that not only is the war still going on, but that the Fire Nation is winning. In the first episode of the season reminds us of the war, but generally its just been something in the background. Firstly, the fact that Omashu is now under Fire nation control drives home the fact that the world is at war.

The main good thing I can think of is that it advances the plot a fair bit. Katara and Sokka make a startling discovery while fishing: a boy frozen in an iceberg, perfectly preserved and - amazingly - alive. The fake plague to get the city's inhabitants felt rather silly to me - its good as an idea, but the way the show, um, showed it felt silly to me. When a boy found frozen in a block of ice is thawed, the world learns he's the Avatar they've been waiting for, and his destiny takes a dizzying turn.

It has some good stuff (Aang's first fight with Azula, the introduction of Ty-Lee and Mai, finding out why Bumi decided to surrender the city), but it also has quite a lot of stuff I didn't really like.
